Reality sets in . . . again

Well, many of you may know by now that the World Finals were cancelled on Saturday evening. We had been following the weather very closely for a couple days. Mike was very disappointed. All of the rest of us were as well. I at least felt good about them cancelling the whole event. In the telling of this tale we are about to feel like folks think we don’t really WANT to run the car. That is SO NOT TRUE! This has just been a bad year for Bonneville all in all.

We were scheduled to get up at 1am Sunday morning to make our flight in Charlotte. We had to make that flight anyway so we can get the truck and trailer home again. By 1:30pm (Utah time) we had the rig and were riding back home. Mike’s hope was for us to get beyond Denver, Colorado, before we stopped. The morning traffic can be so crazy in a city that size that we did not want to have to navigate it first thing this morning. As the trip progressed I really wondered if we would have to throw in the towel on that plan. However, we put one mile behind us at a time and we made it through Denver.

It was particularly aggravating in Denver because they had started some kind of work on I-25 which closed off the whole road for a section. The sign said “take an alternate route”. What? We didn’t know any alternate routes. We got off the interstate because we had no choice. We were really looking for a hotel but stumbled across a detour sign. We followed it and one more and came back to the interstate at the end of the roadwork. Thank goodness. So we are out of Denver and looking for a hotel. One painstaking exit at a time we realized we were going to have to drive to Limon . . . another 65 miles. You can relate to how tired we were. We finally arrived in Limon at 1:30am. Thank goodness they had a room at a Microtel we had stayed in last year. It was brand new then and it still looks like it today. I think we were asleep by 1:35am. Now, with 6-1/2 hours sleep behind us we are headed out again. Hopefully we will get back to a normal night’s sleep tonight.

Incidentally, Mike has seen on the news this morning that I-70 behind us is backed up an hour so we don’t have to worry out that.

I am most grateful to the Lord for safe travel, a comfortable bed and a hot shower in Limon, Colorado.

Headed home.
